A Dram Good Bartender...

What makes a Dram Good Bartender? In our opinion somebody who is up for re-inventing the taste of whisky by putting it into a cocktail. Whisky and Coke, its time for a change. Whisky cocktails, are ye aff yer heed? We don't think so. Whisky cocktails are a new taste sensation, presenting exciting opportunities for bartenders to broaden whisky's appeal away from an older and ageing consumer base. We have visited the best bars to profile the leading mixologists who are pushing boundaries and creating innovative whisky based drinks.

Erik Lorincz, Head Bartender of The Savoy Hotel's American Bar

Simon and Franchi of Simply Whisky recently staged the Simply Whisky Cocktail Extravaganza, an event they designed to present three sensational single malt whiskies to taste first neat and then in a cocktail. The evening culminated in the ultimate flavour sensation as they called upon Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year 2010, Erik Lorincz of The Savoy Hotel's American Bar, to create a special cocktail containing the World’s oldest whisky, the Mortlach 70 Year Old / 1938. On hand to support the evening was Colin Dunn, Global Brand Ambassador for Diageo, and Stuart Fritz, Manager of LAB Bar. Highlights of the evening are below.

  • Warming up for the event

  • Piping in the Mortlach 70 Year Old (1938)

  • Franchi of Simply Whisky…a safe pair of hands

  • Erik Lorincz pours the Mortlach 70 Year Old (1938) into the waiting chalice

  • Sharing the ingredients of our Mortlach 70 Year Old (1938) / Elgin cocktail with the assembled audience

  • Our Elgin cocktail takes shape

  • Gravity lends a helping hand

  • Eyes skyward…this is a big pour for a memorable whisky cocktail!

  • Franchi, Erik, Simon and our Elgin cocktail

  • Thanks to Hilary, Colin, Erik and Stuart for a great night!
